 Traineeships
  • What is a Traineeship?
For full details about traineeships please contact your local Australian Apprenticeship Centre.

Traineeships (New Apprenticeships) are a combination of work and training. A trainee is employed by an organisation and a registered training organisation (RTO) is designated to manage the training. User choice is operative in most States.

An employer selects their own trainee to employ and provides on the job training to match their workplace requirements.

The Federal Government may pay financial incentives to the employer and other benefits may be available.

The State Government may pay for the training component for new entrants to the workplace.

    A traineeship should be a WIN-WIN situation.

  • Information for an employer
For a traineeship to work successfully, the employer should provide a mentor (supervisor) to work with the trainee as a workplace coach. Support should be seen as a team effort with the organisation, mentor, trainee and the registered training organisation all working to achieve a successful outcome.

This should provide an opportunity for an employer to select an employee and work with them during their training to mould them to their enterprise. Like all employment situations, the careful selection of a trainee is an important part of the process. The positive attitude of a trainee is often the key to a successful outcome.
The trainee must not have previously completed a qualification of the same level. For full details see the Federal Government web site, and the following State links.
